Political Philosophy Mike Anglin is honored to have served as your council member for the past four years, and with your vote on August 6, 2013, he will continue to work for the citizens of Ann Arbor. Mike listens to people, he understands their concerns, he builds coalitions, and he strives to make every citizen's voice heard. Mike is accessible to his constituents through events, emails, phone calls, mailings and volunteer work. As a member of the City Council, Mike has voted to preserve our neighborhoods. He believes in encouraging local businesses. He supports responsible spending, and his top budgetary priority is maintaining and improving vital services and infrastructure. His advocacy on behalf of our parks has been of great benefit to our city. He has met with citizens and city staff to resolve issues - from snow removal, sidewalk repair, neighborhood police enforcement to tree planting. Mike's advocacy for the environment ranges from protecting the Allen Creek floodplain to restoring the Dean Tree Fund's planting program. Mike Anglin's service to the community extends beyond his formal role as council member. He has a true desire to help people, and to make our city more attractive. Mike volunteers with Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels, the Family Learning Institure, the Performance Network, the Michigan Theater, and the Sierra Club. Help Mike to continue to make Ann Arbor a better town for all of us by voting to re-elect him in 2013. Biographical Information Mike has a diverse background and experience in working with people from all walks of life. Mike first taught science in junior high school in Brooklyn NY. After receiving his MA in Special Education, he taught as an early childhood reading specialist. Later he helped prepare special education students, aged 18-22, to enter the work world. For the next 12 years Mike ran his own construction and renovation company. Mike is a master electrician. As an independent contractor, he successfully worked with a great many customers and suppliers. During this period he employed several people but always continued his role as the company electrician. For the past 15 years Mike and Kathy's home has been a bed and breakfast on Ann Arbor's Old West Side. Their First Street Garden Inn has been featured on the Small Elegant Hotels website. Mike helps many people through his extensive volunteer activities. He works with the Ann Arbor Kiwanis Club helping with Saturday sales. He has served on the Kiwanis board of directors. He helped organize their Meals on Wheels program for the home bound and does Meals on Wheels deliveries. Mike uses his teaching experience to tutor children in reading for the Family Learning Institute. He is a volunteer member of the Executive Committee of the local chapter of the Sierra Club. Together with his wife Kathy, he has made our city more attractive. Mike and Kathy added all the beautiful plants around their home. Their home was on the 2005 annual Garden Walk Tour. The Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department gave them a Golden Trowel Award in 2000. |
